Tom Atwood's recent work has focused on portraits of creative personalities at home such as John Waters, Todd Oldham, Buzz Aldrin, Julie Newmar, Ross Bleckner, Edward Albee, Joel Schumacher, George Takei, Simon Doonan, Michael Cunningham, Don Bachardy, Ned Rorem, Junior Vasquez, Tommy Tune, Barney Frank, John Ashbery, Carson Kressley, David Del Tredici, Edmund White and John Bartlett.
Atwood won first place in Portraiture in the Prix de la Photographie Paris competition, chosen from thousands of entries from over 85 countries. He has won additional awards from the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Center for Fine Art Photography, Manhattan Arts International, Artrom Gallery Guild (Rome), Kodak, CameraArts Magazine, Photo Life Magazine, Photographer's Forum Magazine, The Photo Review, Applied Arts, Communication Arts, Graphis and the Advertising Photographers of America Association, which showcased Atwood as one of three featured photographers in an international competition sponsored by the Getty Museum and the Armand Hammer Museum. He has been recognized on Photo Life Magazine's list of Top 50 Emerging Photographers and the Golden Light Awards list of Top 100 Photographers. Atwood's first book, Kings in Their Castles, also won Best Photography Book of The Year from ISO Books.
His work has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in NY, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Center for Fine Art Photography, the Pacific Design Center, the Directors Guild of America, the George Eastman House and the International Museum of Photography and Film. His work also exhibits at galleries nationwide, most recently at ClampArt in NY, Farmani Gallery in LA, Louis Stern Fine Arts in LA and PDNB Gallery in Dallas.
Atwood's work has been featured on national television and radio, as well as in over 125 publications in over a dozen countries including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Elle, The Art Newspaper, Artforum, Art Ltd., Applied Arts, Photo Life, Photo Selection, The Photo Review and PDN.
He has shot photography for a variety of corporate clients, from L'Oreal Paris to Disney, BMW, Lexus and CAA, as well as a variety of editorial clients, from Brandweek to Angeleno and LA Confidential. Atwood has a Bachelors from Harvard University and a Masters from Cambridge University (England). He is also a visiting photography lecturer at UCLA. Before Hollywood, Atwood's studio was at different times based in San Francisco, New York, Paris and Amsterdam. In a past life, he also held director and executive positions at two national advertising agencies. Atwood grew up on a dirt road in the woods of Vermont. |
